Real Wedding – Charlotte & Stephen

Planning a wedding and want to know what it’s really like getting married in our yurt or barn? Our Events Assistant, Leah, is here to take you through all the details of one of our gorgeous recent weddings…

Your first wedding when working in Events is always a big deal,
it’s the wedding you will always remember and the one you learn and grow from.

For me, Charlotte and Stephen were the best couple to have as my
first. They knew me from the beginning of my role here and fully embraced this, involving me in every way they could.

I booked their wedding after only a few days of being in my position (DAUNTING!!) and I couldn’t wait to get started. Knowing that we only had 4.5 months until the big day meant we had to get stuck right in. The date
was set for November 2017 and the fun began.

So let’s just get into it…

The proposal story?

‘Our proposal story is so unromantic that it was perfect for the
both of us! We were sat on the sofa one evening, Stephen was playing a game and
I was reading my book, when he just turned to me and said, do you want to marry
me? I simply replied…… YES, that night we went online and ordered an engagement
ring. Totally unconventional but the proposal couldn’t have been more perfect
for the two of us.’

This proposal story just sums up Charlotte and Stephen, their stress-free
nature and laid back approach to everything really shines through, as long as
everybody is happy and having fun then what more could you want? We tried to
carry this approach throughout the wedding day to really make the day
personal to them both and it worked perfectly.

The planning

Throughout the planning stages of the wedding, I regularly met
with Charlotte to run through the ideas she had and to make sure we were all on
the same page with her plans for the day. This meant catching up on whether she
had made anything new at home. Charlotte is a DIY queen and really found her
forte with the décor as you will read further on. Looking back on the
months leading up her big day, Charlotte says that she loved the whole experience of
planning her special day ‘Everything ran so perfectly there was no need to be
stressed. The staff at Gwel made sure there was nothing for me to worry about,
they really put me at ease.’

The day

The wonderful Charlotte and Stephen were married on a wintery day
in November 2017. After a short engagement, although they had been together for
12 years, the couple tied the knot in the glorious Yurt,
later followed by their scrumptious wedding breakfast that was enjoyed by all
of the guests, including the couples three Jack Russells. The couple weren’t able
to pinpoint a particular part of the day that was their favourite, they said ‘Everything
was perfect! The day ran flawlessly, every single one of our guests said how
wonderful our wedding day was.’

The food

Running through the wedding day was their laid back approach. The
couple opted for a hog roast for their wedding breakfast which went down a
treat with their guests and was a more relaxed way of dining that suited the
couple impeccably. For their evening food, they chose a pasty supper, which gave their guests a quick refill so they were able to carry on dancing the night

As a sweet treat alongside the wedding cake, they created a
doughnut tower – seven tiers of yumminess surrounded by an array of sweets for all
of the guests to enjoy, including some delights for their four legged friends.
This was such a great way to incorporate the whole family’s love for
scrumptious deserts.

The decor

Charlotte and her mum totally took over the decoration side of the
wedding. From origami butterflies for the place cards to the cake topper and
table plan, everything was made at home. Charlotte’s Nan even helped with the
flowers for the centre pieces, creating a truly bespoke look and turning the
room into a flowery Eden which smelt amazing!

The couple went for burgundy tones throughout the décor, flowers
and bridesmaids dresses, which was perfectly for the time of year, carrying the
autumnal vibe throughout the whole venue, Charlotte recalls her wedding day
being absolutely perfect, when asked if she would change anything her reply
was ‘Everything about my wedding day was perfect, although due to it being a
cold November day we didn’t get the chance to take as many photos as I would’ve
liked. But we all have the memories.’ The couple’s photographer, Simon Winters,
did a fabulous job of capturing the day with some beautiful candid shots of the

The Groom also had a large role within the decoration, he swagged the yurt with fabric creating a beautiful
area for the pair to deliver their vows. All these things helped the couple
stay within their budget, because they wanted a short engagement they were
realistic with their money, Charlotte recalls ‘Make sure you are clever
with your money; spend the money on things that are a priority for you. Make
sure you have a realistic budget to start off with and go from there.’

The honeymoon

Following the wedding day, Charlotte and Stephen didn’t go
overboard on a big honeymoon, they relaxed and spent time together staying in
one of the beautiful, pet friendly lodges at Gwel an Mor for two nights with
their dogs. Charlotte says ‘Stephen and I spent the weekend together with our three dogs. We didn’t really do much, apart from just celebrating our first few days
of married life together. We also took a trip to Dartmoor Zoo for a fun day
out.’ I asked if the couple’s life had changed at all, since becoming
husband and wife, and they simply said ‘Life is no different! Everything is
still as perfect as it was before we got married; Stephen and I were just truly
meant to be together. After 12 years of being together we are pretty settled in
life, marriage is what you make it, so enjoy every second!’

Advice for
future couples

Charlotte says, ‘Have faith in your wedding planners, they know
exactly what they are doing and nothing will ever be too much for them, for me
Leah and Lucy were amazing, and I cannot recommend them enough. Everything
about Gwel an Mor was perfect, the staff, the venue and the accommodation was
out of this world. Stephen and I chose to have our dogs as a big part of our
wedding day, the staff couldn’t have been better with them, they looked after
them all night, making sure they didn’t escape, keeping them occupied during the
speeches and most importantly, giving them lots of cuddles! Nothing was a
problem for the staff and they were so laid back and relaxed it made the day

Since Charlotte and Stephen’s wedding day back in November, I have
grown into my role as Event Assistant wonderfully. I’ve been taking on tasks I didn’t
think I’d be able to and creating a confidence I never would’ve had before. The
pair will always be remembered by me and I will hold their wedding day close to
my heart for the rest of my career within this industry.
