Ready for a wildlife experience in Cornwall?

Spring is in the air at Gwel an Mor Resort in Portreath. The daffodils are coming into bloom and our Feadon Farm Wildlife activities are ready for action.

Gwel an Mor’s own Dr Dolittle, Gary Zammit, leads the young and young at heart on wildlife tours through the fields and woods near Feadon Farm. Take a look at the glorious nature on your doorstep – feed a tame fox, fly a barn owl or get up close to a vole, mouse or snake among others.

As Gary says, “Kids get such a kick out of meeting our animals, to get so close to them and learn all about them. They then are dazzled by the fact that these creatures are all around us, in our gardens, fields and hedgerows. Even the adults leave with new found knowledge and more importantly a massive smile on their face.”

“Experiences like this are so important for the well-being and conversation of British wildlife. Every child in Britain should know more about these fascinating fellows.”

Based on the Gwel an Mor Luxury Resort site at Portreath the walks are open to the public (but must be pre-booked) and run to a schedule during the week and at weekends. As well as the Wildlife Experience, Feadon Farm also offers a Meet the Animals experience, Rock Pooling, Falconry, Night walks and Badger Watch.

So book your space, pack your camera and your wellie boots at head for the Farm.

Feadon Farm also offers a unique kid’s party experience guaranteed to be the talk of the playground.

Child-friendly meals in Cornwall at the Terrace Restaurant

Here’s Falmouth Packet’s Georgie Carter on what makes our Terrace Restaurant a fantastic place to feed the smallest members of the family…

Don’t fancy cooking tonight, don’t worry, the Terrace at Gwel an Mor has the whole family covered. You may have already tried the sumptuous seafood sharing platter, or maybe the ‘to die for’ tapas selection. I will confess I have tried the Pork belly with crackling more than once.

What about the children’s menu? Have you given it a look?

Dining with young children is a piece of cake at the Terrace Restaurant

Dining with young children is a piece of cake at the Terrace Restaurant.

I thought it would be a great idea to take my mother-in-law to Gwel an Mor for dinner for her birthday. With three-year old Mini Me in tow we all perused the menu when I actually paid attention to the price – £2.95 for a toddler menu – whoop whoop!

If you are wondering if it can match muster with the adult meals, the answer is – this is Gwel an Mor, of course it can!

The choice is what you’d expect from a children’s menu – pizza, burger, pasta or even battered fish – but all are home-made from scratch. Simply choose one main and a side and you have a home-cooked meal even the fussiest toddler might find it hard to complain about. Sides include mash potato, baked beans, vegetable etc.

Mini Me went straight for pizza and chips – it was if she knew it was a Birthday party! The portion size was generous and Mini-Me struggled to eat it all.

I had a cheeky taste (all in the interest of the review you understand) and found all the fantastic flavour, style and taste of the adult meal – but just in a portion size fit for a little tum – and at that incredible price you only need a little wallet.

The pizza, on hand-made, hand pulled dough was delicious with not too much topping to make it a mess-fest. The shoe-string fries disappeared in a flurry of ketchup.

If you have a child with a more refined palette, you can also order smaller portions from the ‘grown up’ menu dishes. The children’s menu is designed for younger guests aged 12 years and under – the ‘larger’ kids meals are £4.95 – which is still a bargain for home-cooked fare.

When it came to dessert we decided on some homemade ice cream which came looking so ‘grown up’ Mini Me glowed with pride. Simple ice-cream with fresh fruits, but it made her feel like Royalty.

So next time you can’t decide on what to give the kids for tea (or where to take the whole family) give Gwel an Mor a try.

A spa in Cornwall? Try Gwel an Mor and improve your wellbeing…

When asked about Gwel an Mor it is easy for us to enthuse and wax lyrical about the place. We work and love it here, but of course it is always great to get nice feedback, so instead of us telling you how good our Wellbeing Spa is we thought we’d leave it to an expert.

In the summer Emma Ferguson, News Editor of the Packet newspaper, paid us a visit for a spa treatment and this is what she thought…

‘THE kids may only have been out of school for a couple of weeks but if you’re already feeling the stress from continuous childcare why not take couple of hours to yourself?

Ditch your offspring at their grandparents and head over to Gwel an Mor for one of their pampering spa treatments – even the drive down towards Portreath, the sea glittering in the distance, will soothe the mind.

Whilst I am yet to hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in my own life, the stress of a 47-hour plus working week is something I could always do from escaping from, even briefly, so I jumped at the chance to try the LaStone Therapy treatment.

Using hot and cold stones alternately, it draws out toxins from the body and penetrates the tissue much more deeply than a standard massage can achieve.

From the moment I walked into the spa I began to relax. Situated just off from the main reception, the spa lights were pleasantly dimmed and tinged with blue, creating a calming bubble away from the harsh light of outdoor life.

After completing a questionnaire on any health and medical issues, I was led into a similarly softly lit treatment room and given a moment to disrobe. The treatment began with an all-over massage, as I let my mind drift.

Hot basalt stones were then taken from a cabinet – my therapist checking the temperature with me – and used to massage my skin in smooth, circular motions, starting with each of my legs. The stones were hot to the touch on first contact, but not burning, and you could almost feel the heat penetrating down to the muscle, to help loosen and soothe away tightness.

Smooth marble stones were then taken from cold water and dried before being placed down, for a similar massage, designed to reduce inflammation.

After the initial, very brief surprise – akin to stepping into a swimming pool on a hot day, but far less shocking – the marble felt like cool silk being trailed across my skin.

Before I had a chance to become cold, however, the warm stones were returned for a final time. This process was repeated on my feet, before small warm pebbles were placed in between each of my toes and my therapist moved up to my chest, shoulders and sides of my neck, in turn.

After removing the pebbles I turned onto my front and the stones were used on the backs of my leg, my back and the back of my neck.

Afterwards I felt wholly relaxed, both physically and mentally, which lasted throughout the rest of the day – I even failed to get frustrated when getting stuck behind a slow driver on my return home; something that would normally get my blood pressure shooting.

The whole process took just over an hour, although there is the option of a 30-minute version concentrating just on the back, or the full works that also includes scalp work, lasting 90 minutes.’

Prices start at £45, rising to £90 for the full treatment.

We love Tehidy Woods!

One of the fantastic things we have here to offer at Gwel an Mor, and indeed Cornwall itself, is that we are on the doorstep of so many amazing things.

A short hop from major attractions, a short stroll from the beach and a literal stone’s throw from the woodland wonderland that is Tehidy Woods.

Bluebells at Tehidy Woods, Cornwall

Many of the Gwel an Mor team were lucky enough be born and raised in Cornwall and the woods have been part of many lives for as long as they can remember. Many happy days have been wasted in the leafy cover of Tehidy, from days away at camp with primary school to day trips on BMX bikes (in the days when kids still did those things).

Over the years Tehidy has undergone many transformations – the latest is into family friendly and accessible country park and in this incarnation it is flourishing.

Tehidy Nico's pic

Tehidy is wonderful for families.

With over nine miles of paths, crisscrossing 250 acres of woods and lakes, it is no wonder why families flock to the site on those lazy, hazy crazy days of summer. Although that being said the wood is enchanting all year round.

One of the biggest draws for the wood, other than toilets and a lovely little café, is its abundance of wildlife. The very lucky see otters, the lucky see bats and owls and EVERYONE see the squirrels, ducks and swans. They won’t let you pass without some sort of toll.

It’s not just bread you bring to Tehidy, it’s handy to have a pocket of nuts as well as the squirrels are bolder that Tuffy (or Squirrel Nutkin if you’re that little bit younger).

Find your own hidden glen for a picnic, or use the designated spots – there’s a lot of choice. With five main access points including North Cliff car park, and South Drive car park your visit can be different each time, keeping you coming back again and again.

Keep your eye out for local theatre company Rogue who put on magical productions at various times throughout the year. Soon they will transform Tehidy into an enchanting wonderland for the Winter Wood – meet fairies, spirits and spites in a storytelling extravaganza.

And of course, Tehidy Woods are just a hop, skip and a jump from our luxury lodges at Gwel an Mor!

Christmas is coming!

Christmas is coming! What’s that? It’s only August.

That it may be, but for us here at Gwel an Mor we need to ensure that the most magical time of the year is truly that…

When you look for a Christmas holiday you have an idea of your perfect day in mind even before you book.  Whether you are looking to get away from it all, or you’re looking to get back to the simple tradition of family, Gwel an Mor wants to make your festive wishes come true.

That’s why we are here, in August at the end of a heatwave, talking snowflakes, reindeer, presents and mince pies.

Do you want to know a little secret?  We’ve even had a chat to Santa already.

Father Christmas called into the office a few weeks back to check up on our seasonal plans (I’m not joking).  It seems that he loves visiting Gwel an Mor too.  He wanted to make sure that his reserve reindeer Lowen and Nadelik had started to grow their new antlers and that his helpers had stocked enough presents for his visit at the end of November.

So as you unpack your picnic and pour out the pimms, think of us little elves here at Gwel an Mor getting ready for Christmas.

You can celebrate with us at the Celebration of Christmas Fair with takes place on November 29th and 30th.

Why not book on to the exclusive weekend break – for more see here
